Safe sex

This little rant has been niggling under the surface for a long time; every time sex education is mentioned in the UK someone stands up and says that it will encourage teenagers to have sex. It’s not rocket science, but teenagers are naturally interested in sex. It’s to do with the continuation of the species - it’s natural.

Every summer, over here in France, there is a campaign to remind everyone to take their condoms with them on holiday. You can buy them for a euro, indeed packs with 2 or three for a euro, we have machines in the streets, you can buy them at the supermarket and the chemists have them on prominent display. When a certain-young-man-who-shall-remain-nameless was in his early teens, he and his friends spent the summer playing water bombs with condoms bought from the chemist. “They hold a lot of water, you know mum, much better than balloons!” Non of them worried about going in to buy them which means that when they do need one for the pupose for which they were made, they won’t have any hang-ups.

Recently the above mentioned young man attended a university information day. He came back with lots of leaflets including a little book which he showed to me (provided by the student’s branch of our health insurance company). This booklet talked about sex and the different aspects of it. (Some practises of which I’d never even heard of.) The main point running through the whole book was, to practise safe sex, respect for others, relationships and hygiene. (Have you noticed we talk to each other about these things?)

My point is that if you hide it away, kids will educate each other in the worse possible ways and the results are children who aren’t really wanted or loved. I’ve taught young people who’ve grown up knowing they were ‘mistakes’ or ‘accidents’ – not a good start to their lives.

I remember when a promiscuous young stewardess on a ship I was working on, was asked if she wasn't worried about AIDS (for this was when it was getting v big) "Naaaah", she said, "I'm on the pill...."

I recall a sex education film at school. Apparently courtship rituals involve men holding bar stools up by one leg to impress each other or something. I wasn't quite sure how it worked, and I'm still not entirely sure.

Couldn't agree more.

The British, as we know, are OBSESSED and bitterly conficted about sex. It stems from a deep fear of thinking about genitalia in any form, what you do with it, or where it goes (the British are also obsessed with toilets for the same reason).

(Did you see the Pope putting his Holy Foot in his Papal Gob again this week by telling his worldwide flock that condoms CONTRIBUTE to the spread of AIDS too? That bloke is a liability, even amongst the hard right 15th Century wing of the Catholic Church)

My parents steadfastly refused to tell me anything...finally one of the guys I was in band with took pity on me and took me aside and explained the general working of things to me when I was well past the age I should have known for my own good!

Later, after we had moved here with our oldest and the youngest was on the way, my wife tried to convince me I should call my parents and ask them if they were ready to talk about things yet. I didn't, but we both had a good laugh about their reaction!

Treat for you on my blog if you have time...

Dru: I missed the sex education lesson because I had a 'cello lesson. It was all about rabbits so I didn't miss much.

Donna: You're right, as long as the information is accurate.

Jo: The pope is an excellent example of the mis-informed. In fact I think the one before wasn't too hot either.

Alan: My best friend and I spent a long time agonosing over what the terrible secret men had was. Drawings in books weren't exactly helpful...

To visit my: Thanks

Sexuality is a the obvious human condition, as you mention pre-programmed for the continuation of the species.
I find nothing wrong with talking about it ...its the one subject matter in which ignorance is not bliss.
Condoms for all, sorry Pope Benedict.
